Warning… not for the squeamish. That little mou Warning… not for the squeamish.

That little mouse that was living in my study to recover from what I thought was a leg infection… Escaped the box I had them in, made a nest in the corner of my desk from this tissue, and left behind this botfly larva, which was what I thought was the infection in the leg. My giving it a light squeeze yesterday must have opened up the hole enough for the mouse to finish the job. The mouse ate the snacks and drank the water provided, and is now living somewhere in my study… the botfly larva is not living in my study, but is now outside :-)
Learned some things about bank swallows today. Lai Learned some things about bank swallows today. Laid on my back in a meadow and watched the parents feeding the fledglings in mid air! While they were out visiting the beaver bog, I took a closer look at one of the empty nests. Also wanted to see if I could get a look at the bird tracks near one of the entrances. They looked pretty big for swallows’ feet, and I wonder if someone was trying to predate on the young. Discovered that bank swallows, like tree, swallows, use feathers in their nesting. In this case a turkey feather. You can see it from below in the nest to the right.
Came across this little person this morning in the Came across this little person this morning in the rain. Upon further observation, I noticed an infection in one of their hind legs, so now they are cozy in my study and hopefully building up strength to be returned to the same spot I found them once they’ve gained some weight. In the meantime, I continue to trap mice in my school bus Hipcamp rental and feed them to the crows. Ahhh, the complexity of humans.

Listen to the sound of a young Barred Owl beg for Listen to the sound of a young Barred Owl beg for food! They probably fledged from the nesting cavity in early May and their parents will help feed them into October. The female makes a similar begging sound while sitting on her eggs and young chicks so her mate will feed her. Barred owl females are larger than the males because they need that extra weight to make it through the incubation period.
